As the regular season winds down and the postseason heats up, it is now or never for the softball squads of the 14th District. Who will go big and who will go home? We shall find out in this weeks’ one-of-a-kind district showdown schedule at Greenwood High School.

For the 2017 season, the 14th District Tournament schedule is a mirror image of last year’s schedule. However, the results may tell a different story when all is set and done.

The tournament will begin on Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Greenwood High’s Penny Reece Field with #4 Bowling Green vs. #5 Warren Central and will conclude on Thursday evening with the title game at 6:00 p.m.

Here is a rundown on what to expect, including predictions, match-ups, and information:

District 14 Softball Tournament Seedings:Screen Shot 2017-05-21 at 11.52.15 AM

#1: South Warren

#2: Warren East

#3: Greenwood

#4: Bowling Green

#5: Warren Central

District 14 Softball Tournament Schedule:

  • Monday, May 22 – #4 Bowling Green (8-15, 0-7) vs. #5 Warren Central (3-22, 1-6) – 6:00 p.m.

Although winning only three games on the season, the Lady Dragons of Warren Central have shown leaps and gains in 2017, including picking up their first wins since 2014. One of those wins was over the Lady Purples. This game is a hard one to pick. It should be a good game with both teams fighting down to the wire, looking to continue their season into Tuesday night and possibly further than that.

Clay’s Pick: Bowling Green 3, Warren Central 1

  • Tuesday, May 23 – #1 South Warren (28-2, 8-0) vs. #4 Bowling Green (8-15, 0-7) – 6:00 p.m.

The Lady Purples have won the play-in game and have advanced their season further. Their reward: a date with one of the hottest teams in the state. Something has to give; the Lady Spartans have shown glimpses of the 2013 Greenwood squad all throughout their dominant season. Although 44-0 is out of the question due to two late-season losses, South Warren is definitely my favorite to not only take home the 14th District and 4th Region Crown, but to maybe take home the hardware at the state tournament as well.

Clay’s Pick: South Warren 9, Bowling Green 2

  • Tuesday, May 23 – #2 Warren East (23-6, 6-2) vs. #3 Greenwood (14-15, 4-4) – 8:00 p.m.

Hold on to your hats folks, because this one will be a dandy. The Lady Raiders have a sour taste in their mouth after seeing last year’s fantastic season halted by the Lady Gators in the first round of the district tournament. Although Warren East has swept Greenwood in the regular season, those results can go out of the window when these teams meet on Tuesday evening. Emotions will run high, both defenses will trade punches, and I believe that the Lady Raiders will get their revenge in the end.

Clay’s Pick: Warren East 1, Greenwood 0

  • Thursday, May 25 – #1 South Warren vs. #2 Warren East – Championship – 6:oo p.m.

This will be, no doubt, a one-of-a-kind showdown. This is what makes high school softball great. The Lady Spartans have swept the Lady Raiders in the regular season, but both games have been really close. It is very tough to pick who will win this game, but in the end, I think that Warren East will again fall victim to the fantastic pitching of Shelby Nunn and the bats of South Warren. Maybe the Lady Raiders will get another crack at it in the 4th Region Tournament.

Clay’s Pick: South Warren 6, Warren East 4 – Both teams advance to Region 4 Tournament at WKU
